Our History
We joyfully celebrate the third anniversary of the Tamil Church Of Christ – Whitby, marking a significant milestone in our journey of faith. What began as a humble outreach has now become a vibrant, Christ-centered community rooted in prayer, service, and growth.

The Whitby ministry was officially launched on August 7, 2022, as an outreach of the Tamil Christian Church of Canada (TCCC) – Markham, in response to the growing Tamil population in the Durham region, including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa. Many Tamil families, including those from the Markham church, had relocated eastward due to rising housing costs in the city.
God's hand was evident from the beginning. As we sought a space for worship in South Durham, Rev. Deborah and the leadership of St. Mark's United Church Canada welcomed us warmly into their historic church building—once a Methodist Tabernacle. Their generosity opened the door to a new chapter in our mission to build God's Kingdom.
The roots of the Tamil Christian community in Canada trace back to the early 1970s. The first Tamil Carol service was held in 1971 at Calvary Church on Pape and Danforth, with just 25 attendees. In 1986, the Tamil Christian Church of Canada was officially registered, solidifying its presence and mission in the Canadian Christian landscape.
Today, the Tamil Church Of Christ is a thriving church with around 100 attendees joining our Sunday services, including many children. Beyond worship, we offer Sunday school, youth programs, monthly cottage prayer meetings, and joint Bible studies and prayer gatherings with the Markham church.
In 2025, we began a significant step forward by entering into discussions with the Wesleyan Church in Canada. Our congregation has been officially registered as "Tamil Church of Christ" under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. As we celebrate three years of God's faithfulness, we look ahead with gratitude and expectancy, remaining committed to sharing the gospel and serving our community.
